Can I change the employer in Canada with a work visa?

Canada which is also called the Great White North is one of the countries which drives a lot of migrants from across the world. The welcoming atmosphere and multicultural environment make it a great place for migrants to settle down in Canada.

The country also has various job opportunities and every year many visas are granted for Canada immigration. The opportunities to build careers, high standards of living, quality healthcare and high-quality education, and several educational institutions, etc., make it one of the most favored countries for migration.

Whether you want to build a professional career or begin your entrepreneurial journey, Canada offers a lot of visa programs and opportunities for migration. However, you will be granted the visa only if you match the eligibility criteria for each visa program.

Let us discuss all the Canadian work visas and how is it beneficial?

Canada Work Visa

A Canadian work visa is given to those who want to work in Canada for a particularly skilled profession. There are a wide variety of work visa programs for professionals. Depending on the eligibility criteria, you can apply for the relevant visa program. In general, a Canadian work visa is the work permit that you require as a migrant worker to work in Canada.

There are two different types of work permits:

  • Openwork permits
  • Employer-specific work permits

Open permits:

Openwork permits as the name suggest allow you to work for any employer in Canada. The employer must have been authorized to employ the workers.

You can get open work permits:

  • If you are a student who is not able to manage your expenses
  • You are a dependent family member of a candidate who is trying for a Canada PR visa
  • You have got an offer of employment from a Canadian employer
  • You are the spouse/common-law partner of a skilled worker or an international student in Canada
  • You already have an employer-specific permit but are getting abused or at the risk of getting abused in your workplace in the country
  • You are an immigrated student who has completed education in DLI and are eligible for PGWP
  • You already have a temporary resident permit

With an open work permit, you can change employers and need not get another visa permit but with employer-specific permits, the rules are slightly different.

Employer-specific permit

The employer-specific permit will only allow you to work in Canada based on the conditions of the employer who has been nominated for this work permit. Depending on the factors like the duration of your work, the name of the employer in Canada you can work for, and your work location.

In case you want to change jobs or change employers when you have an employer-specific permit, you must apply for a new work permit.

Eligibility for an employer-specific work permit

You must have prior work experience in the specific field as your occupation

The employer must nominate for the employer-specific work permit for a Canada work visa.

If you are an international student then you must provide proof that you have already started studying in DLI (Designated Learning Institution).

Provide all the certificates of your qualification, work experience (if any)

However, the visa eligibility requirements differ from one visa to another. Depending on each requirement, you have to submit the required documents for eligibility
