What are the UK’s Immigration Laws?

The UK is one of the most popular destinations for migration across the world. The education offered in the country, a wide range of job opportunities in multiple sectors, and a good standard of living attract migrants from countries all over the globe to live in the UK.

Earlier when the UK was part of the European Union (EU), the people from other European countries were able to easily move to Britain and work without stringent immigration regulations. After Brexit, the UK got separated from the EU and different immigration rules were brought in for people who belong to countries which come under the European Union; similar to the immigration rules which individuals from other parts like South Asia, Africa, Australia, and so on must follow in order to migrate to the UK.

The UK, which is the second-largest economy in Europe, has shown its economic power and stability even after Brexit. Additionally, due to this, Britain is opening its doors to skilled workers from overseas to come and add value to the already powerful economy. As a result, immigration laws have changed and a points-based immigration system has been introduced..

What are the UK’s New Immigration Policies?

Immigration laws or policies primarily deal with those who will visit or stay in the country. Similar to other countries, the UK also has a points-based system for visas. There are several UK immigration programmes through which the immigrants can move to the UK and eventually settle down as well.

The Main Immigration Pathways are:

  • The UK Skilled Worker Visa
  • The UK Global Talent Visa

The UK Skilled Worker Visa:

To get a UK Skilled Worker Visa, you must score a total of 70 points. These points are calculated based on certain important criteria:

  1. You should have a job offer from a employer who has been approved by the UK government
  2. You should have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ by the UK employer confirming the role and job offered by them.
  3. The job which you are offered should be equivalent to skill level A or skill level RQF3
  4. The job role or the skill must be listed on the skilled occupations list
  5. You should be proficient in the English language
  6. Your salary should be as per the standards mentioned for the particular role/skill as decided by the UK Government
  7. You are eligible to trade points/ get extra points if you have a PhD relevant to your job

The Tier 1 – UK Work Visa is primarily given to those migrants who are outside the EU and EEA areas. Especially those who are highly skilled professionals, graduates, entrepreneurs, or investors.

You can stay in the UK for 5 years if you have a UK Skilled Worker Visa. After completing 5 years duration, you can apply for a permanent resident visa.

The UK Global Talent Visa:

As the name suggests, this visa is for those who show a specific talent in scientific research, arts, or technology. You must be at least 18 years old to become eligible for applying for this visa. However, it is mandatory to have an endorsement from the UK to get the Global Talent Visa. This endorsement is to acknowledge that you have superior talent in a certain recognized field and you are eligible for this visa. Those who get this visa can study as well as work in the UK for 5 years.

Conclusion

After Brexit, the UK is proving its economic stability by generating more opportunities for skilled workers across the globe. With new immigration rules and policies, it facilitates skilled workers from overseas to enter the country, work, and experience a high standard of living.
